Where Are We Going?

Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity, but in doing it. Greg Anderson, fitness trainer and author.

Long ago, I discovered that the serendipitous experiences, the pleasant surprises, the joys of traveling have always been in the journey. The destination has merely been a turning around point.  When Bob and I were were touring the country in a small Class B motorhome, we mapped our trips, knew the campgrounds available at the end of each day’s travels, had a good idea of where we were headed.

But it was all the little incidences we encountered as we drove, the unexpected side trips we took, the unique people we encountered at campgrounds that made each day memorable. And the realization of that one fact made us greet each new day with the thrill of expectation and anticipation. What would the new day’s travel bring? We were never disappointed.

Artists of all genre, take pleasure in the crafting of their art. The process, like the journey, offers gratification. I’m a firm believer in the advantages of the journey, whatever the destination, and the process, whatever the product. I’m not the only one who appreciates the journey wherever it may lead.

Wow! So, where are we going? Whether it’s off on a vacation of a life time, a pilgrimage, a new job, marriage, parenthood, retirement, we need to focus on the joys each day brings even if they pop up only like a few dandelions in a yard that needs mowing. Let us always enjoy the moment, the process, the journey. For it is in both ambling and marching to the beat along life’s path that we discover our treasures.
